In 2021, Recife was featured by the international portal Rest of World as one of the six global cities at the forefront of shaping the future of the IT industry, alongside Lagos (Nigeria), Bangalore (India), Shenzhen (China), Tel Aviv (Israel), and Medellín (Colombia). This strong technological influence will also be a focal point of discussion at the ABPI 2024 Congress.

The capital of Pernambuco stands out primarily due to the technology hub known as Porto Digital and the CESAR (Center for Advanced Studies and Systems of Recife).

Porto Digital is one of Brazil’s leading technology parks and innovation hubs, specializing in Information Technology and Creative Economy (CE). It places a particular emphasis on segments such as gaming, film, video, animation, music, photography, and design.
Established in 2000, it also plays a role in urban technology. Located in the historic center of Recife—a previously neglected area of little economic significance—it has undergone rapid urban revitalization, real estate development, and historical heritage restoration.
Founded in 1996, CESAR is Brazil’s premier innovation and digital transformation center. It operates across the entire innovation spectrum, encompassing research, human resource development, experimentation, the creation of new business models, and the development of robust and scalable solutions.
CESAR boasts a workforce of over a thousand collaborators and has executed more than 3,000 projects. In addition to fostering new businesses, the center oversees CESAR School, an innovation school dedicated to equipping professionals with the skills required in an increasingly disruptive market.

The city boasts a modern, vibrant, and diverse culture influenced by indigenous, African, and Portuguese heritage. Its primary celebration is Carnival, featuring the dominant rhythms of frevo and maracatu. Recife has also been a pivotal stage for significant music movements like the Mangue Beat, which emerged in the 1990s to revitalize the cultural and artistic scene of Pernambuco.
Recife is home to two important museums: the Aloísio Magalhães Museum of Modern Art (MAMAM), a reference for modern and contemporary visual arts production, and the Francisco Brennand Workshop, showcasing the works of one of Brazil’s greatest sculptors. Inaugurated in 1971, the workshop is a blend of a park and museum, housing over two thousand pieces spread across 15,000 square meters, with gardens designed by Burle Marx, lakes, and enormous ceramic sculptures.

Visitors to Recife should not miss the opportunity to explore the paradisiacal destinations near the city. These include Porto de Galinhas Beach, the Fernando de Noronha archipelago, Praia dos Carneiros, Maragogi, often referred to as the “Brazilian Caribbean” just over 100 km from Recife, and the historic city of Olinda, a colonial gem known as an artists’ colony, with several galleries, workshops, and museums

The 2024 Congress will kick off on Sunday, August 11th, at 5:30 PM with the opening ceremony and will continue for two more days with a program specially designed for both in-person and online attendees, as the event will be hybrid again next year.

Interactions and networking, essential elements of such events, will also take place in 2024 through excursions designed to allow everyone to explore the beauty of Recife.

Mark your calendars and join us to discuss the most relevant topics in intellectual property while discovering (or revisiting) these idyllic settings.
